Collins, Monica P. [12:55 PM]:

I'll let you see my conversation when I'm done.

Lacy, Robert P. [12:55 PM]:

must be nice

Collins, Monica P. [12:55 PM]:

lol not really lol: I have to come up with nearly $3K.

Lacy, Robert P. [12:56 PM]:

:|

thats a whole 2 degrees @ mountain ive

view

Collins, Monica P. [12:56 PM]:

$2195 for Web Database Development.

Lacy, Robert P. [12:56 PM]:

:|

geeeeeeeeesssseeee

Collins, Monica P. [12:57 PM]:

It covers a lot of stuff, w/o all of the other crap DCCCd makes you take.

Lacy, Robert P. [12:57 PM]:

web database?  sql server?

still a lot

a microsoft cert doesnt even cost that much

Collins, Monica P. [1:00 PM]:

hang on, i've been typing into the wrong box lol

Here, look for yourself: _http://www.gatlineducation.com/webdata_over.html

click on Outline

Collins, Monica P. [1:03 PM]:

What do you think?

Lacy, Robert P. [1:04 PM]:

a lot of that you will not use here

such as perl, php, coldfusion

this seems to be geared more toward the developer that does front end work

Collins, Monica P. [1:04 PM]:

So, it might be best to take the separate courses as I had orignally planned on doing.

Lacy, Robert P. [1:04 PM]:

where as all we do is backend

not even database

Collins, Monica P. [1:04 PM]:

That's where I came up with $2780.

Lacy, Robert P. [1:05 PM]:

but methods, services and server side code that the front end utilizes

seperate courses yea

but one thing im looking at doing is taking the mcsd exams

there is a series of them @ 100$ per exam, but in the end you get the certification

which is pretty impressive in the developer world, can even add it to your title

Collins, Monica P. [1:06 PM]:

These are the separate classes: _http://www.ed2go.com/online_courses/wp/web_and_computer_programming.html

Lacy, Robert P. [1:06 PM]:

microsoft certified solution developer

Collins, Monica P. [1:06 PM]:

yeah, that would be nice

Lacy, Robert P. [1:06 PM]:

those seperate courses look better

would only need to take about 1/4 of them i think

stuff like c++ and java wont really matter

or php and mysql

Collins, Monica P. [1:07 PM]:

This CS rep is gonna hook me up with one of their counselors, however, I'm thinking that you're probably right about the smaller classes.

Lacy, Robert P. [1:07 PM]:

yea

Collins, Monica P. [1:07 PM]:

lol either way, i'm spending over two grand

it still hurts

Lacy, Robert P. [1:08 PM]:

geese

yea

Collins, Monica P. [1:08 PM]:

however, the thing that i like is that, even with the 6-week classes, there is still an instructor.

Lacy, Robert P. [1:09 PM]:

yea

Collins, Monica P. [1:12 PM]:

yeah, i think that i'll back to my original plans.

Lacy, Robert P. [1:13 PM]:

i dunno

im kinda in the same boat

i know the stuff, just not well enough

Collins, Monica P. [1:14 PM]:

I don't have enough of any of them to do any kind of damage.

Lacy, Robert P. [1:14 PM]:

hmm

Collins, Monica P. [2:05 PM]:

k, so can i get a 6-week course from DCCCD for $139?  I don't think so.

Lacy, Robert P. [2:28 PM]:

yea

i got a semester course for that

its like 30 $ per credit hr

if you live in dallas county

Collins, Monica P. [2:31 PM]:

i do.  however, that is too slow for me.  i can have all of these taken inside of a few months.

Lacy, Robert P. [2:31 PM]:

true

but will the learning experience be the same?

Collins, Monica P. [2:31 PM]:

it should be.

Lacy, Robert P. [2:32 PM]:

hmm

Collins, Monica P. [2:32 PM]:

hang on

looks like they are back to their original $99 price.  even better.  _http://www.ed2go.com/online_course/cpb/detail/Introduction_to_C%23_Programming.html?department=WP

_http://www.ed2go.com/online_course/asp/detail/Introduction_to_ASP_NET.html

Lacy, Robert P. [2:34 PM]:

hmm

Collins, Monica P. [2:35 PM]:

i'm still gonna try and get some of this reimbursed.

Lacy, Robert P. [2:35 PM]:

hmm

that might be difficult

i couldnt get mine back

Collins, Monica P. [2:35 PM]:

i have the years, the rating is the problem.

at this point, all i care about is getting the assignments.

Lacy, Robert P. [2:37 PM]:

hmm

scott seems to be more willing to spread them out

have you asked him for them?

Collins, Monica P. [2:37 PM]:

not yet.

Lacy, Robert P. [2:37 PM]:

i see

Collins, Monica P. [2:38 PM]:

i'm kinda screwed.  with web stuff, you really need to know a number of things to do some damage.  the days of coding a simple html page are long over.

Lacy, Robert P. [2:38 PM]:

yea, true that

i just recently finished up my first full .net web

Collins, Monica P. [2:39 PM]:

that, and i don't have any 'pet' projects to work on.  i have a possible one for c#, not xml.

Lacy, Robert P. [2:39 PM]:

no tech spec no nothing...code review this week

kinda nervous because i know i did some things the long way, but its the only way i know how

Collins, Monica P. [2:40 PM]:

i guess thart i was very short sighted when i got transferred to this group.  i guess that i hoped that all of this training would be offered to me.  kind of stupid on my part.

Lacy, Robert P. [2:41 PM]:

thats one thing ive found

they are not going to train you that much

its all trial and error

Collins, Monica P. [2:41 PM]:

and i haven't had the money to go out and seek it for myself.  as it is, the only reason that i will be able to start up these classes in the next couple of weeks is because i'm sacrificing the little spending money that i have.  and now i will be replacing that with yet another loan, meaning that i still can't pay into my 401k.

problem is, i don't know enough for even 'trail and error'.

i don't like the golearn because they don't offer enough practice.

Lacy, Robert P. [2:42 PM]:

hmm

yea

Collins, Monica P. [2:43 PM]:

well, reading the chilton manual on your particular car does not make you skilled enough to work on your car, if you get me.

Lacy, Robert P. [2:43 PM]:

yep

Collins, Monica P. [2:44 PM]:

i'm just gonna have to make a sacrifice, whether I can afford it or not.

Lacy, Robert P. [2:44 PM]:

have you tried looking for torrents?

thats how i learned iphone programming...i found this linda.com tutorial

thats another place you should look

lynda.com

its mostly high level stuff tough...not deep down nitty gritty

Collins, Monica P. [2:45 PM]:

sounds interesting.  i have a bit of a problem with that.

Lacy, Robert P. [2:45 PM]:

but its useful to get a good over view

but the torrents are full of stuff

like exercises, exams etc

all fre

e

Collins, Monica P. [2:46 PM]:

ever try to look up the spelling of a word in the dictionary when you don't know how to spell the word?

Lacy, Robert P. [2:46 PM]:

hmm, no

usually i can sound it out enough

Collins, Monica P. [2:46 PM]:

lol.  try it sometime.  my point is that i can't look for something when i don't know what it is i'm looking up.

lol yeah, so do i, however occasionally i forget exactly how to spell it.  one or two letters off and you wind up searching in the wrong part of the dictionary lol.

i've come across some language stuff through torrents.  i just don't enough about anything to be dangerous.

Lacy, Robert P. [2:48 PM]:

hmm

Collins, Monica P. [2:48 PM]:

kind of like saying that i want to buy a sports car, but not know what make or model, size engine, etc.

Lacy, Robert P. [2:48 PM]:

yea

Collins, Monica P. [2:49 PM]:

i wouldn't know what to look for.  and i have an adversion to asking such things.

Lacy, Robert P. [2:49 PM]:

gotcha

when i first got here though....not gonna lie

i knew very little

they asked me to modify the front end of an asp.net page

i was like :|

but what i did was looked at what was already there, and built on it

Collins, Monica P. [2:50 PM]:

imo, you are in a different position.  they hired you knowing that you didn't know a lot.

Lacy, Robert P. [2:50 PM]:

i saw that oh <asp::button> that means add a button control

and on runat="server" is needed to make it a post back control

after a while it all made sense

Collins, Monica P. [2:50 PM]:

as with me, or someone like me, i am expected to come to them knowing it.

Lacy, Robert P. [2:51 PM]:

yea

they assumed i knew more than i did

Collins, Monica P. [2:51 PM]:

as in 'oh you want this job, show us what you know', not 'oh you want this job, k, we'll train ya'.

lol

Lacy, Robert P. [2:51 PM]:

lol yea

Collins, Monica P. [2:52 PM]:

and i haven't been in the position to train myself in the last double handful of years.  it's gonna hurt to do it now, but i gotta.

i don't wanna go out like Wildow did.

Lacy, Robert P. [2:52 PM]:

who

Collins, Monica P. [2:53 PM]:

he was in another merchandising section, you probably didn't know him.  he retired the same year that Persyn did.  I think that he was a 4D.

Persyn was a 4F.

Lacy, Robert P. [2:53 PM]:

ahh

Collins, Monica P. [2:54 PM]:

I've got 20 years to get to where Jeff is.  I would be satisfied with that.

Lacy, Robert P. [2:54 PM]:

i just dont want to be at the very bottom anymore :(

i want davids job one day...in like 15 or 20 yrs

Collins, Monica P. [2:54 PM]:

i know, i feel ya.

i don't know if i would want that one.

Lacy, Robert P. [2:55 PM]:

hmm

Collins, Monica P. [2:56 PM]:

probably easier work for me, in the grand scheme of things.  problem, i have to get from here to there, and i'm having enough trouble as it is lol.  it would get far harder before it got easier.

Lacy, Robert P. [2:56 PM]:

hmm yea

well if it makes you feel anybetter, i havent gotten any training here and dont expect it

sure sr or david will show me a thing or two every now and then, but thats about it

advice

Collins, Monica P. [2:57 PM]:

actually, this company has not been very big on that, unlike my mother at the irs, who gets bookoos.

i just can't go out and get it for myself, which is why i'm so pissed at things.

Lacy, Robert P. [2:57 PM]:

yea

im still trying to figure out how i can squeeze in more school on top of my debt/income

i feel ya

Collins, Monica P. [3:00 PM]:

yeah.  like i said, i will do it this year, cuz i'm tired of things staying as they are.  however, i either sacrifice spending money or i spend another year not paying into my 401k.  actually, truthfully, the only reason that the latter is happening is cuz i have some car work to do and i need to get the loan for that, and if that is the case, i might as well get one big enough to cover everything.

Lacy, Robert P. [3:00 PM]:

hmm, yea

Collins, Monica P. [3:01 PM]:

we have serious stipulatons on our 104k package here.  only one loan at a time against it, and when you get a loan, you are not allowed to make any deposits into it.  so, i have not paid into my for a decade.

Lacy, Robert P. [3:01 PM]:

dang

Collins, Monica P. [3:03 PM]:

i know, tell me about it.  all my fault, but it still hurts nonetheless.  i got a loan in 2000 and it took 3 years to pay off.  then i got one for $13K in 2003 and that took 5 years to pay off.  i've gotten three more in the last 3 years, for yearly car repairs and other expenses.

Monica: Hello. I am trying to determine the best course of action as to which courses I should purchase, one of four programs or separate classes. I know which seperate classes I need however, it might be to my best interest to take one or more of the inclusive programs. Is there someone that might help me with this decision, please?
* Welcome Monica! Please wait for our admissions counselor to answer your call.
* Call accepted by operator Rose. Currently in room: Monica, Rose.
Rose: Hi Monica, how are you this today?
Monica: I'm fine, thanks for asking.
Rose: You are welcome. Please allow me one moment while I review your question.
Rose: Thank you, Monica.
Monica: Did you have a question for me?
Rose: Monica, what programs are you interested in or the ones that you are thinking might help, possibly if taken separately?
Monica: That is where my question lies. Some months ago, I came across your singular classes, and I had planned on taking some 20 of those. Today, I came across what appears to be programs, like a degree plan, that contains some courses. I do not know if those are the singular ones grouped together or not.
Rose: Monica, Upon successful completion of the program, our students will be awarded a certificate of completion issued from the partner school they are registered with. Our students must obtain a final passing grade of 70% or greater to be awarded the certificate.

Is this the type of added edge that you are looking for to get you started in this career field?
Monica: Partly. I first and foremost want to acquire the knowledge, however having the certificate of completion to place in my work HR files would not hurt, either lol. Are you saying that the sigular classes do not get you a certificate of completion?
Rose: Monica, have you had a chance to review one of the programs outline?
Monica: yes, i have, both of the singular courses, and the programs.
Rose: Monica, my apologies do not mean to confuse you or add more concerns.
Monica: No worries. Ok, I will give you what I have been looking into.
Monica: Let me back up a bit and give you the courses that I was originally looking to take from some venue. These are what I need to progress to the next level.
Monica: CSS. PHP. XML. Java. Javascript. SOAP. AJAX. SQL. Oracle. C#. ASP.NET. HTML/DHTML. I found most of these courses on your web site
Rose: Monica, allow me to give you information on the 2 programs and maybe that will clarify it better.
Monica: I think that you might have just answered a question: I have been seeing separate classes AND program/degree plans.
Rose: Can you please access the following link:http://www.ed2go.com/
Monica: already there. The two that I am interested in are .NET Training and Web Database Developer. Both of those would give me most, if not all, of the separate courses that I was originally wanting to take.
Rose: That is correct, one offers the short 6 weeks and ours is the (most of them 6 months)
Monica: wait a sec, they are separate things? i thought that both were part of the ed2go thing?
Monica: Can both of those programs be taken at the same time?
Monica: There are a couple of overlapping classes in both of these programs, such as XML and JavaScript. I wouldn't have to take them twice, would I?
Rose: Monica, the short programs are ed2go and online training (some times -formerly known as Cengage learning) programs.
Monica: I see. And the 6-month programs?
Rose: Yes, you may take them at the same time, however, I am not that it would be beneficial for you.
Monica: k, why is that, please?
Monica: too much at one time, you mean?
Rose: Monica, again this is my opinion.
Monica: No worries, thanks for being honest. And you are probably correct lol. 1 year woukn't be bad either lol.
Monica: I mean that I could live with taking them in sequence.
Rose: The 6 weeks program are just like a summary .. They are like a quick hands on.. I would say.
Monica: oooooo, interesting.
Monica: hmmmm
Rose: The 6 months - are self paced so you possible can complete earlier or if needed more time, extensions are available.
Monica: A quick hand's on, vs more detailed. But both offer actual instructors? Ok, let me take a differenr route, then: how much for both of those programs, Web Database Developer and .NET Training? That may be the deciding factor as to which direction I go.
Rose: One moment, please.
Monica: For the 20-some-odd separate courses that I was interested in, I was looking at $2000+, at $139.00 per.
Monica: $2780.
Rose: Monica, the suggested retail price for the Web Database Dev program is $2.195.00
Monica: And the other?
Rose: We do not offer .net training any more..
Monica: Crap. Do you have a replacement that has those courses in it, please?
Rose: Let me get the program that replaced it. one second, please
Monica: Thanks. You know that page is still up on the site, right? I only came across it today.
Rose: Monica, do you mind providing me the link. I was not aware that students could access it.
Monica: sure, hold on.
Rose: Thank you.
Monica: http://www.gatlineducation.com/aspnet_online_overview.html
Rose: Monica, thank you. I also wanted to suggest to you.
Rose: I can have one of our counselors contact you to further assist you with you concerns. They will have a lot more detailed on the programs and will be able to better assist you with deciding which program would be beneficial to you..
Rose: Would you like me to forward a request?
Monica: Sure, that would be good, thanks.
Monica: As I said, I am interested in what the two programs together have, for the most part. However, I could probably also just take the Web Dev and add in separate courses to fill in the rest.
Rose: Monica, may I have your number, time (including time zone) that is best for you?
Monica: I'm in Texas, Central. My cell phone is 469.964.7210.
Monica: Any time would be good.
Rose: That is certainly a good point/question to ask our counselor what they suggest.
Rose: Thank you and your email is Collinsm@aafes.com, correct?
Monica: yes, that is my work email.
Rose: Thank you, one moment. Please.
Rose: Monica, I will forward your request and you should expect a call tomorrow or the latest Thursday.

Monica: not at this moment, no. thanks.

Rose: Monica, thank you for using our live chat services.
